You are first impressed by the scale and strength of the paintings and are then drawn in, to look more closely at the “DETTAGLIO”, the DETAIL. The Subjects for this Body of Work, are generally architectural. Familiar elements of the built environment aged and eroded with time and use. The Technique is essentially Traditional and realistic. Oil washes building to impasto layers of paint pigment, ground chalk and stand oil, applied to stretched canvas. The Compositions, although of observable reality, become abstract by focusing on only a portion of the object rather than the whole. Walls of crumbling stone and hand-made bricks; peeling layers of paint and plaster; doors and frames of splintered timber, rusting nails staining the silvered grain; caves filled with “found” implements and faded icons. This Exhibition is a celebration of the beauty in the Detail of Objects/Structures, not remarkable when new, but developing in personality with usage over time.
